Foreclosures and closing businesses will mean that 'previously used' properties (also called "brownfields") will become available for future use. As an asset to communities and as a limited resource, available land must be recycled and revisioned to meet the needs of a changing economy. These properties may or may not have environmental contamination but the "land recycling" process is complicated by many factors including regulatory constraints, redevelopment policies, community interests, and shared financial and environmental risk. In this seminar course, we will explore the US process for land revitalization and compare IT to the causes and remedies found in China. The results provide context for a better understanding of global land management challenges that require a balance between the culture, the economy and the environment.
