The recruitment and retention of women engineers can be accomplished by an interdisciplinary approach to engineering, the study of technology in a social context, promotion of mentor and peer networks, and international experiences.
Join IAESTE United States and the University of Illinois Urbana – Champaign in Ireland to cultivate the skills necessary for women to succeed in a global economy. Participants will complete an unpaid internship with an Irish engineering or technical company and will complete a three credit course offered by the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

Who Should Participate
Women engineering students with either freshman or sophomore standing who are interested in gaining technical work experience in a global setting will be ideally suited for the program. No foreign language skills are required. Applicants must be IAESTE student members but U.S. citizenship is not required.

To apply to the IMPACT program, click here. Applicants must first become a member of IAESTE United States before applying and may do so by clicking here. Applicants must submit a non-refundable fee of $50 and upload their resume and transcript by February 1, 2008. Applicants provide one letter of recommendation from a professor, academic advisor, or previous employer (if you have had work experience related to your field of study). The recommender should address your previous academic or work experience as it relates to the IMPACT program. Please submit only one letter of recommendation. Letters may be sent my mail, fax, or e-mail, and must arrive to our office by February 1, 2008. Prior to departure, participants will be required to have a valid passport.
Program Fee
$3800 to $4350 (depending on program enrollment)
Includes tuition for the affiliated Galway Mayo Institute of Technology course, round-trip airfare from Chicago to Ireland, in-country transportation, hotel accommodations, and guided city tours. Participants will be responsible for arranging travel to and from Chicago, vaccinations, some meals and spending money.
Course Information
All program participants will enroll in a three-credit online course offered by Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. The course will carry 5 ECTS credits from the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. It is the responsibility of the participant to work with their home institution to determine if and how the credits will transfer. University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign students will be eligible to receive 3 UIUC transfer credits.
The course will focus on Mulitimedia Technology and Applications. Specifically, the course will cover:
- Multimedia introduction: multimedia hardware issues; analogue and digital A/V; audio, video, animation ,text compression techniques; multimedia authoring packages; copyright and legal issues; accessibility; process of multimedia production.
- Multimedia and the Internet: repositioning content; plug ins; streaming audio and video.
- Digital imaging: resolution, graphic file formats; basic graphic editing techniques: selection, cut, copy, paste, layers effects; repositioning for the Web.
- Audio & video: file formats and compression; basic introduction to A/V editing.
- Multimedia authoring: media integration and animation using a time based authoring package; creating movies and animation; basic A/V integration techniques; animation effects; repositioning for the Web.
