Join IAESTE United States and Purdue University to learn earthquake engineering principles (physics, theory, engineering interpretation, and design) and then travel to Istanbul to see how those principles are applied. Participants will complete a three-credit course (offered online for non-Purdue students) during the spring semester; the international portion of the program will take place in mid-March.

Why Attend:

  • Learn about designing and building inside an earthquake zone through site visits and lectures
  • Engage in dialogue with Turkish technical students and academics in earthquake engineering.
  • Experience Turkey through a diversity of cultural and historical activities and tours.
  • Earn academic credit from Purdue University.

Who Should Participate:
Applicants should be majoring in Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geology, Seismology or related fields with at least sophomore standing and have an interest in earthquake engineering. Graduate students may also apply.  Students from other disciplines with an interest in earthquake engineering are encouraged to consider the program and should contact IAESTE United States to determine their eligibility. No foreign language skills are required, although knowledge of Turkish is preferred. Applicants must be IAESTE student members but U.S. citizenship is not required.

How to Apply:
The program is no longer accepting applications, however, we encourage interested students to check back in Fall 2008 for information on next year's program. The deadline for next year's program will be in mid-November, 2008.

Program Fee: $3,000
Includes tuition for the affiliated Purdue University course, round-trip airfare to Istanbul, Turkey from Chicago, in-country transportation, hotel accommodations, all breakfasts and lunches while in Istanbul, medical insurance and visa. Participants will be responsible for arranging travel to and from the gateway city, vaccinations, some meals and spending money.

Course Information:
All program participants will enroll in a three-credit online course offered by Purdue University. This course will cover a wide range of topics related to earthquake engineering: from the nature of earthquakes to response of structures subjected to earthquake ground motion, and on to principles of seismic design of modern structures as well as retrofit and upgrade of modern and historic structures. The trip to Istanbul, Turkey shall provide participants with plenty of opportunities to see how earthquake engineering concepts are applied in reality.

The course will borrow from:

  • seismology (physics of earthquakes; wave propagation) and engineering seismology (strong ground motion; earthquake intensity measures);
  • geotechnical earthquake engineering (site motion amplification; liquefaction);
  • structural dynamics (engineering representation of structures; response of reinforced concrete/steel/masonry structures to earthquake loads);
  • structural design (principles of earthquake resistant design for new structures and retrofit/upgrade for existing modern/historic buildings and historic monumental structures).

Trip Itinerary:
In Istanbul, participants will visit several historic sites and museums including:

A tour of the City (by bus) and a trip along the Bosphorus Strait (by ferry) are included.

For the technical part of the trip, participants will visit:

  • several historic sites and structures, some of which are undergoing seismic retrofit/upgrade,
  • a metro station dig/construction site for the Marmaray –the railroad/metro network that will include a submarine tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait,
  • a high-rise building construction site,
  • a typical 5-10 story reinforced concrete building site,
  • and an observatory that acts as the base station for a ground motion recording network.

Earthquake Engineering is a cooperative effort of IAESTE United States, Purdue University and Istanbul Technical University.  For more information on the course, please contact Lauren Alexander at techabroad@aipt.org .
