Student involvement in IAESTE begins with the Local Committees (LCs.) Located at top science and technical universities, LCs are committed to providing global opportunities for members and international interns. LCs promote and arrange educational activities for United States and international students in order to advance their knowledge of engineering, natural and physical sciences, other technical fields of study, as well as cultural education. A major focus for each Local Committee is to secure jobs for IAESTE United States to trade at the Annual Conference each year. In exchange for each job raised by an LC, one member of that LC is given priority placement in an IAESTE internship.
LC members also receive international students when they arrive. This reception service includes locating housing, assisting with banking and transportation, and providing a social network for each intern. Through the social network provided by reception, international interns can attend baseball games, go to local bars, visit a nearby beach, or do just about any leisurely activity while in the United States. Students benefit from this experience by interacting with international students on a personal level, which helps them gain additional understanding of cultures outside the US.
In addition to reception, Local Committees offer US students the opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills that will be vital as they transition into the workforce. Due to the diverse nature of LC responsibilities, members are able to participate in a large variety of leadership roles, including Membership, Finance, Job Raising, Reception, and Web site management. LCs are encouraged to plan and promote events that encourage international understanding and leadership among the university population.
